PROJECTS
On 17th November 2001, a total of 18 volunteers from Mowlem South East, a local construction company, undertook a project to reconstruct The Ark. The Ark is a compound for a whole variety of small animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs and tortoise, providing them with an opportunity to get a breath of fresh air and some exercise. In addition, it allows potential owners to view and hold the animals as well as demonstrating the kind of environment that is ideal for the animals' best welfare. The existing compound was little more than rough ground with a few old hutches, so Debbie Smy (Animal care Assistant), developed an outline scheme and issued a challenge to the Mowlem Team - to refurbish the area in a single weekend and within a budget of only £2500! Unfortunately, the Team failed to reach the deadline but they returned a fortnight later to complete the work. However it was not all bad news because, with the generous help of some local suppliers, they managed to do it at a cost of only £600! The previous week, Mowlem South East held a quiz night in favour of "The Friends" which raised over £500. In addition we had fantastic support from the public who donated a couple of hundred pounds during the weekend and we now have a brand new facility and are actually in profit!! Well done and thanks to all concerned!!
